Grapes

Grapes (Angur in Nepali) are a growing fruit crop in Nepal, with cultivation focusing on table grapes, particularly in warmer valleys and some mid-hill regions. Popular varieties include green and red grapes.
Grape cultivation in Nepal is an emerging but small-scale sector. While grapes have been grown in Nepal since the Rana regime over 75 years ago, most current consumption relies heavily on imports from India and China, as heavy rainfall coinciding with the berry harvest period is a significant challenge, limiting the season for local producers.
Grapes are nutrient-dense fruits packed with powerful antioxidants like resveratrol and anthocyanin, which reduce inflammation and combat oxidative stress. They support heart health by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, protect against diabetes with low-glycemic index, and promote eye health, strong bones, and healthy skin.
The key benefits of Grapes include:
- Heart Health: Grapes are rich in potassium and fiber, which help manage blood pressure and lower cholesterol levels. They help reduce inflammation and prevent artery hardening. Compounds like resveratrol and flavonoids also help reduce “bad” (LDL) cholesterol and prevent blood clots,
- Potent Antioxidants: They contain high levels of polyphenols (especially in the skin), which fight chronic diseases and protect against oxidative stress,
- Digestive & Kidney Function: Grapes are roughly 81% water and contain natural fiber, which helps prevent constipation and supports kidney health,
- Brain Function: The resveratrol in grapes is linked to improving brain health, including reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s,
- Eye Protection: Compounds like lutein and zeaxanthin in grapes can protect the eyes from blue light and UV damage,
- Diabetes Management: Despite their sweetness, grapes have a low to moderate glycemic index. Nutrients in grapes may actually increase insulin sensitivity and help your body process glucose more effectively.
- Immune System Support: Grapes are a good source of Vitamin C, copper and other antioxidants, supporting the immune system,
- Nutritional Value: High levels of vitamin K and copper, with very few calories,
- Healthy Aging & Skin: Antioxidants in grape skins, particularly in red and purple varieties, help fight signs of aging by protecting cells from damage and boosting collagen production for glowing skin.
