Poppy Seeds

Poppy Seeds in Nepal, known locally as Khas Khas, Posta Dana, or Aphim, are small, nutrient-dense, oil-rich seeds used in curries, sweets (like kheer and halwa) and as a popular topping for breads.
Traditionally used in Ayurveda to promote relaxation, improve digestion due to high fiber content, and support bone health with calcium, iron and magnesium despite strict regulations on the cultivation of the opium poppy plant itself.
The key benefits of Poppy Seeds include:
- Digestive Health: High in dietary fiber, poppy seeds help regulate bowel movements and prevent constipation,
- Heart Health: Rich in unsaturated fats, particularly omega-6 and linoleic acid, which can help lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease,
- Bone Health: A good source of minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium, which are essential for maintaining strong bones and teeth,
- Brain Function: Rich in iron and B-complex vitamins, poppy seeds support oxygen transport to the brain and the production of neurotransmitters, which may improve concentration and cognitive performance,
- Stress Relief & Sleep: Traditionally used to reduce anxiety, promote relaxation, and improve sleep quality,
- Nutrient-Dense: They provide essential nutrients, including iron (for anemia), zinc (for immunity and wound healing), and manganese (for metabolism),
- Skin & Hair Care: The oil and nutrients, such as antioxidants, help protect against skin damage.
While safe to eat, consumption of large quantities may lead to false positives on opiate drug tests.
Although rare, some individuals may be allergic to poppy seeds.
