Capsicum

In Nepal, capsicum, commonly known as Shimla Mirch, is a high-value vegetable crop primarily grown in the mid-hills and Terai regions. While it is traditionally a cool-season crop, it is now cultivated year-round through the use of plastic tunnels and greenhouses.

Capsicum is a nutrient-dense vegetable that offers significant benefits for the immune system, eye health, and heart function. It is exceptionally high in vitamin C, often providing more than double the daily requirement in a single serving.

The key benefits of Capsicum include:

  • Immune System Support: Rich in Vitamin C. This vitamin enhances white blood cell function and helps reduce the duration and severity of common colds,
  • Eye Health Protection: Capsicums are rich in carotenoids like lutein and zeaxanthin, which protect the retina from oxidative damage and may reduce the risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration,
  • Cardiovascular Wellness: High levels of potassium help regulate blood pressure, while antioxidants like flavonoids improve blood vessel function and lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol,
  • Skin Vitality and Anti-Aging: The abundance of vitamin C and beta-carotene supports collagen production, which maintains skin elasticity and protects against damage from free radicals and UV exposure,
  • Weight Management: Capsicums are low in calories and high in fiber, which promotes satiety and supports healthy digestion.
