Bhogate Sadheko is a traditional Nepali fruit salad made from juicy grapefruit or pomelo segments mixed with mustard oil, salt, sugar, toasted sesame seeds and sometimes fenugreek seeds (methi). It’s a perfect balance of sweet, sour, spicy, and bitter, often served during festivals like Mha Puja and Tihar, especially in Newar communities.

Directions

Peel and cut the grapefruits and oranges.

Dry roast the sesame seeds and grind them into powder.

In a bowl, combine the grapefruits, oranges, sesame seeds powder, yogurt (or curd), sugar, lemon juice, pepper and salt and mix gently.

Heat the mustard oil in a pan and add the fenugreek seeds to the hot oil and once they crackle, add them to the salad and mix quickly.

Remove the pan from the heat and add the turmeric powder.

Pour everything over the mixture and stir well.

Let stand for 15 minutes or more for all the flavors to blend.

Ready. Enjoy the salad with a hot or cold drink or a local alcohol.
