Chicken Sekuwa is a popular Nepali street food consisting of skewered chicken pieces marinated in a blend of aromatic spices and grilled over a natural wood or charcoal fire. The name originates from the Nepali word “sekne,” meaning to cook over direct heat.

It is often served as an appetizer or snack, frequently accompanied by beaten rice (chiura), tomato chutney and fresh salads.

Directions

To marinate the chicken, mix in a bowl the lemon juice, the vinegar, the plain yogurt (or curd) (optional) and all the spices (garam masala, turmeric powder, cumin powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, ginger paste, garlic paste, salt and black pepper).

Cut the chicken into cubes.

Add the chicken cubes to the bowl and mix well.

Cover the bowl and place it in the refrigerator for 2 hours or overnight.

Prepare the grill (or preheat the oven at 190 degrees).

Slice the capsicum and the onions (optional).

Thread the chicken onto skewers. You can add a slice of onion and capsicum between each cube if you like.

Grill the chicken or bake it until cooked through.

Ready! Serve with rice, salads, vegetables curry and/or pickles. Have a hot or cold drink or a local alcohol. Enjoy!
