Dal Chawwal

Dal Chawal is a staple, comforting dish from the Indian subcontinent consisting of steamed rice (“chawal”) and cooked lentils (“dal”). Often described as a ultimate comfort food, it is a daily, nutritious, and budget-friendly meal popular across India and Pakistan.
It is commonly served with sides like pickles (achar), papad and onion-tomato salad.
It is a rich source of protein, iron, magnesium, potassium, and fiber. The high fiber and protein content makes it filling, which can help control appetite and aid in weight management. It is considered light on the stomach and a good option for dinner.

Directions

Mix the two lentils, salt, red chili powder and turmeric with 1 liter of water.

Cover and cook over low heat for 40 minutes, or until the lentils are tender. Add water if necessary.

In a separate saucepan, cook the rice with water and salt.

Drain the rice and return it to the pot. Cover and keep over very low heat to dry out any remaining moisture.

Chop the onion, ginger and garlic.

In another pan, heat the oil and add the garlic, onions, and ginger. Cook until the onions are lightly browned.

Add all the spices: cumin seeds, turmeric powder, curry leaves and salt. Mix and cook for 1 minute.

Pour over the lentils and mix well. Cover and cook over low heat for five minutes to allow the lentils to absorb the flavors.

Off the heat.

Optionally, chop the coriander leaves and add them to the lentils.

Ready. Serve with rice. Enjoy!
